This year Vichy Elementary was named a winner of the JD Fullner Recycling Leadership Award for the third time. This recognition, bestowed by Napa County, the city of Napa, and Napa Recycling, honors local organizations and businesses that demonstrate leadership in landfill reduction, composting, and recycling.
“Ten years ago, while I was teaching second grade at Vichy, Napa Recycling had just started their food waste compost program,” said Principal Sally Zikmund. “Our class visited the compost and recycling center on a field trip. The students had also learned about ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot’ through a traveling exhibit from the Napa Valley Museum. I came up with a project for my students: How can we reduce waste at our school? As part of the project, students weighed the school trash. At that time, nothing was separated.” More…
