50 years ago on January 22nd, the Supreme Court announced the landmark decision of Roe v Wade which changed the Constitution to legalize abortion. The following 50 years were not uneventful. And even though it was not a true surprise, the Dobbs decision last June eliminated the federal constitutional right to abortion.
While the ruling is horrific for women’s rights and health, it also may have been a gift – it motivated women of all ages to get to the November polls and vote to reclaim their rights! And indeed, the Red Wave was prevented by the turnout!
Now we must remind those who would deny us that we will not go quietly! Never again will we be made second-class citizens! We will rally, we will march, we will continue to organize and we will vote.
The National Women’s March is spearheading the #BiggerThanRoe March/Rally across the country. Napa’s grassroots activists are happy to be part of the effort. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision, we will gather on January 22nd.
