SUMMARY:Power Lines: Building a Labor-Climate Justice Movement
DESCRIPTION:The existential risk of climate change is about power. Human power. It will take real power to undertake a sufficient\, just transition and the only source for that power is in the number of people we can organize to act collectively wherever we work\, live and play. \nThe movements for worker power and climate justice are crucial allies in this cause. For too long\, the corporate interests that stand opposed to a meaningful response to the climate crisis have pitted these movements against each other\, as if the livelihoods of working families are at odds with our shared rights to a safe and healthy environment. \nBut recently this division has begun to heal. The book Power Lines collects the stories of some of these recent collaborative efforts of labor and environmental justice groups that have both exercised and foreshadowed the combined power of frontline workers and frontline communities. \nJoin co-editor and organizer Jeff Ordower and veterans of these recent fights for a discussion of the challenges and possibilities of a labor-climate justice alliance. \nAfter the discussion\, join us at the Café for happy hour to keep the conversation going. Enjoy $2 off drinks during happy hour from 7 – 8 pm.

SUMMARY:Through the Eye of a Needle: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:Join this multi-disciplinary panel of design professionals as they discuss design in the time of climate change. Find out how human ingenuity\, cross-disciplinary inquiry and simultaneous advocacy coalesce to supercharge our creative powers and lead us to the most sustainable\, thoughtful and equitable design solutions. \nWith buildings accounting for 39% of global CO2 emissions\, and humans consuming resources at a rate that is 1.7 times faster than what the Earth can regenerate\, the architectural disciplines have an outsized role to play because\, as noted recently by panelist Lindsay Baker\, “architects are trained to imagine and design the future”. The goal for this panel is to discuss how cross-disciplinary inquiry and simultaneous advocacy can maximize our effectiveness as architects and engineers in addressing those most pressing and time sensitive issues of our time. \nInspired by Richard Neutra’s “Survival Through Design\,” this session will begin with each panelist providing an overview of their unique approach to addressing the impacts of climate change. The panelists are recognized nationally and beyond as leaders in the transformation of the practice of architecture. Following a short lunch break\, the panelists will gather in roundtable fashion to discuss the climate topic and to share the many unique\, multi-disciplinary and positive ways that design professionals can approach design in a changing climate. What each panelist has in common is that they are all specialists with decades of experience in their fields\, who also have multi-disciplinary expertise and activist tendencies. By thinking about architecture differently\, they have expanded their influence beyond the boundaries of architecture to more rapidly and effectively bring about change.

SUMMARY:The Shitthropocene :Welcome to the Age of Cheap Crap.
DESCRIPTION:You might have noticed that a lot of things seem to suck right now. This film isn’t about all the things that suck—that would be a really\, really long film. But it is about consumption\, which is both a cause and a symptom of the suckiness. For a bunch of reasons\, pretty much everyone is making and buying too much stuff\, and we’re evolutionarily programmed to want it. What was once an advantage (more! = better!) is now contributing to the destruction of the planet. \nThe Shitthropocene is a journey from the cellular-level origins of our lack of impulse control to the ways our central nervous systems have been hacked in the name of capitalism. It’s also about how we might begin to save ourselves from ourselves. Plus\, there are dancing cave people.
