This solutions-oriented\, free community event focused on regional infrastructure projects and government programs that can reduce climate pollutants and generate renewable energy. \n“We need a Climate Summit in Napa County because we must move faster and do more to meet the climate crisis\,” said St. Helena City Councilmember Anna Chouteau\, who serves on the Napa County Climate Action Committee and was one of the event organizers. “More and more people understand the urgency. Leaders in all levels of government\, private industries\, nonprofits\, and schools are setting bigger and bolder goals moving us away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy. We can use this momentum by bringing people together to work on higher impact climate smart infrastructure projects.” \nCongressman Mike Thompson and his staff participated via video and in person. As the Congressman has frequently been quoted saying\, “Climate change is one of the gravest threats we face today. We could get everything else right\, but if we fail on climate\, it’s all for nothing.” Two-thirds of the climate investments embedded in the Inflation Reduction Act –$250 billion worth – are built directly around Congressman Thompson’s GREEN Act. \n“Our community is a leader on climate action\, and the Napa Climate Summit is a big step in the right direction bringing people together who are taking climate action throughout Napa County\,” he said. \nCommunity members heard from a diverse set of speakers. Davina Hurt\, Vice Chair of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Bay Area’s representative on the California Air Resources Board\, gave the keynote speech highlighting state and regional policies and resources to help local jurisdictions act. There were also panel presentations moderated by St. Helena and American Canyon City Mangers Anil Comelo and Jason Holley featuring projects such as the American Canyon wastewater treatment plant upgrades that will increase our water supply in Napa County\, a public-private partnership between the City of Napa and Napa Recycling and Waste Services that will install technology to harvest methane from organic waste for vehicle fuel and electricity\, Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA) projects aimed at reducing emissions and congestion\, methane capture opportunities up valley from Upper Valley Disposal Services\, and expanded solar power at Napa Sanitation District. \nState Senator Bill Dodd and representatives for Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry\, Congressman Thompson\, and Marin Clean Energy were on a panel moderated by Julia DeNatale of the Napa Valley Community Foundation on funding from federal\, state\, regional\, and local sources. \nThe event was hosted by Napa Climate NOW! and sponsored by PG&E. Napa Climate NOW! is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization formed by concerned citizens to advocate for smart climate solutions based on the latest climate science. \nTraining resources can be found at: https://napa.350bayarea.org/training-resources \nFor further information and for handouts from the event\, contact Lynne Baker at lynne@350bayareaaction.org.

SUMMARY:MLK Day of Service with Napa RCD
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, Jan 20  –  9am-12pm.\nWestwood Hills Park.\n\nJoin Napa RCD as we unite with our community for a day of positive action and impact! This year we’re taking on French broom\, an invasive plant\, at Westwood Hills Park. Together we will work to restore this beautiful space and create a healthier environment for all to enjoy. Our project includes a steep walk from the parking lot\, and then two jobs once we get to our spot: pulling French broom out of the ground and then cutting it up and spreading it out to decompose. No experience? No problem! Our Napa RCD Teen Conservation Interns will provide all the tools and guidance you’ll need. This is a fantastic opportunity for youth\, families\, service clubs\, business groups\, and community members to come together\, give back\, and honor the spirit of MLK Day.\n\nMore information and registration at NapaRCD.org/MLK25\nWith questions\, contact Ashley@NapaRCD.org

SUMMARY:What Sea Level Rise Means for the Bay Area: Rosanna Xia & Liam O'Donoghue
DESCRIPTION:Wherever land meets sea\, heating oceans swell into higher-than-high tides and city-leveling storms. For the last hundred years\, however\, California’s 1\,200-mile Pacific coastline had enjoyed relative calm\, but shifting tides exacerbated by climate change are bringing this serene century to a screeching close. In California Against the Sea: Visions for Our Vanishing Coastline\, now releasing in paperback and audiobook\, Pulitzer finalist Rosanna Xia dives deep into the stakes\, stopgaps\, and potential paths forward for the 27 million people who call this coastline home. \nIn this conversation with East Bay Yesterday‘s Liam O’Donoghue\, Xia dials her lens into the Bay Area to explore what warming oceans mean for our region and how we can prepare. The two will explore how low-income communities have borne the brunt of environmental challenges in the past and are poised to do so again unless we course correct now\, drawing inspiration from local leaders and organizers who are raising awareness today for what may come tomorrow. \nXia’s book\, declared a 2024 Great Read from Great Places by the Library of Congress\, and winner of the California Book Award\, the Nautilus Book Award\, and the Golden Poppy (voted on by more than 230 independent booksellers)\, will be available for sale and signing following the conversation.
