SUMMARY:What Lackluster Progress at COP28 Means for California
DESCRIPTION:January 24\, 2024 10:00 am PST – 11:30 am PST – Zoom. \nThe final agreement reached at COP28\, the annual United Nations climate conference that concluded in December\, recognized the need to transition away from fossil fuels. But it contained almost no details about how nations can wean themselves off of oil\, gas\, and coal. In this webinar\, we will hear from California legislators\, The Climate Center’s own COP28 team\, and others who attended COP28. Speakers will discuss climate policy arenas in which California leads\, including corporate accountability\, and also arenas in which we must do more\, such as phasing out oil and gas. Lawmakers will discuss what more California can do to lead the world to a climate-safe future. \nRegistration is required.

SUMMARY:350 Bay Area Legislative Committee - Sponsoring a Bill 101 Zoom
DESCRIPTION:We have invited Gary Lucks to to our Legislative Committee get-together to talk us through “Sponsoring a Bill 101” – including why we might do it\, what it would entail\, and how it’s different from the support and tracking that we currently do. \nRegister here to learn about sponsoring a bill.\nNovember 19th at 3pm on Zoom.\nEveryone is invited to come and learn about this important approach that could increase the strength of our climate voice in California.  In addition to being an accomplished environmental attorney\, Gary is the author of several environmental policy textbooks\, and has extensive legislative experience to share. \nIn the meantime\, we continue to prepare for the next session.\nJoin us as we continue to research and advocate for the two-year bills we support\, and we’re on the lookout for good new climate bills in the coming session.  We will also continue to work in coordination with the many good climate\, environmental\, and climate justice organizations in the state. Email info@350BayAreaAction.org if you’re interested in joining the team.

SUMMARY:Green Change: Our Community’s Transition to Sustainable Living
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for “Green Change: Our Community’s Transition to Sustainable Living”\, a talk by Fabrice Florin\, Green Change founder and executive director. \nThis free event will be held on Thursday\, November 16\, 2023\, at 1pm. It will take place in-person at the Outdoor Art Club\, One West Blithedale Avenue\, Mill Valley\, California 94941. \nDuring his 40-minute talk\, Fabrice will discuss how he and his wife have transformed their lifestyle and joined a community of like minds to help fight climate change. \nHe will start by sharing his own family’s journey to a carbon neutral lifestyle\, describing their green home and the climate actions they took to reduce their carbon emissions by half in just a few years: using clean energy\, riding electric vehicles\, eating sustainably and living lightly. \nHe will then talk about how a group of concerned citizens joined forces to start Green Change\, the nonprofit climate action network he founded in 2018\, to help their community live more sustainably. \nIn just five years\, they have helped thousands of Bay Area residents take climate action in their own lives\, producing community events and online content – and promoting over a hundred environmental\, educational and civic partners. \nAs a multimedia innovator\, Fabrice has pioneered a wide range of art\, education\, news and entertainment projects at Apple\, Wikipedia and other digital media ventures. See his online bio. \nDuring his talk\, he will show photos and videos of his community’s transition to sustainable living – and share practical tips to help you do the same. \nThis event is hosted by Bridget Mazzini for The Outdoor Art Club\, as part of their speaker series about Civics & Conservation.

SUMMARY:Bringing Offshore Wind to California: A Conversation With CA's CEC and CPUC
DESCRIPTION:Young Professionals in Energy (YPE) SF Bay Area is hosting two energy policymakers for a conversation about the pathways and challenges to development of offshore wind energy in California. \nSenate Bill 100 set a 2045 goal of powering all retail electricity sold in California and state agency electricity needs with renewable and zero-carbon resources. It requires the state to use programs under existing laws to achieve 100% zero-carbon electricity. \nCalifornia Energy Commission (CEC) Chair David Hochschild joins California Public Utilities Comission (CPUC) Comissioner John Reynolds for a panel discussion on offshore wind development goals\, permitting\, grid integration\, finance\, legal consideration\, and more. The discussion will be moderated by Jeff St. John from Canary Media and time will be allocated for audience Q&A. \nThis event is hosted and sponsored by East Bay Community Energy (EBCE) in Oakland\, California. \nAfter the event\, stick around for a social hour with food and drink to connect with our panelists\, participants\, YPE\, and EBCE. \nGet an Early Bird ticket now! SUMMARY:Communities and Climate Solutions Kickoff Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Christian O”Rourke\, Rachel Mandelbaum\, and Taylor Becker have announced a Communities and Climate Solutions Kickoff Webinar focusing on ways communities can maximize benefits from the Inflation Reduction Act. (Recall that Taylor has been featured in two of our team’s past webinars – April 9 2022 and February 25\, 2023 – about How to Secure Federal Funding for State and Local Projects.) \n“The landmark climate and infrastructure laws signed into law by President Biden are making monumental investments in everyday people and our environment. From energy-efficient rebates to billions of dollars in funding for states and municipalities\, there are countless opportunities available to help lower your energy costs and make our communities healthier and more sustainable. \n“Join the Sierra Club on November 1 to learn more about the Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act\, and how these laws can benefit you and your neighbors. \n“Together\, we achieved the largest investment in climate and clean energy in US history. But the full benefits will only be felt if we ensure full and equitable rollout of these benefits. Now\, it’s up to all of us to ensure this landmark law lives up to its promise and creates meaningful\, long lasting change across the country.” \nRichard Rollins\nTeam Manager\, Sierra Club GN Climate Emergency Mobilization Team\nPhone or text: (925) 250-5957
