SUMMARY:Indisposable Live: Defining “Reuse” for Policymakers
DESCRIPTION:An Upstream presentation. As the legislative season ramps up\, it’s promising to see increased momentum behind policies involving reuse. Even as these policies are being developed\, the definitions of “reuse” are scattered and often ill-conceived. Now is the time to properly define reusable packaging in the policy context.

SUMMARY:How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:An inspiring event at the David Brower Center in Berkeley\, CA. February 1\, 2024! Doors open at 6:30. \nWe are at a choice point for humanity. As social and ecological crises escalate globally\, it is clear that the dominant cultural worldview\, informed by colonization\, patriarchy\, capitalism\, and racism is displaying a relationship with Nature and each other that is devastatingly unjust and out of balance. \nTo live in a healthy and equitable world\, we must fundamentally change how we respect and interact with the Earth and one another. To change the present and future\, it is imperative to change the narrative and amplify worldviews and stories of solutions that transform the dominant worldview from an extractivist\, colonial paradigm of exploit and extract to a thriving\, globally-conscious one of respect and restore. \nAt this event\, movement leaders and change-makers will weave together stories\, worldviews\, and experiences of restoration and justice that demonstrate the world we know is possible and needed. \nWe knew in our bones this time was coming. And now we must act in solidarity more than ever\, as we continue building a powerful movement founded on principles of justice\, love\, and a fierce dedication to our planet and our communities. \nThis event is both a fundraiser for Sogorea Te’ Land Trust and the launch of the book by Osprey Orielle Lake\, “The Story is in Our Bones: How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis.” All book sales at this event will be donated to Sogorea Te’ Land Trust to support the powerful work of Corrina Gould and her leadership in the urban Indigenous women-led land trust based in the San Francisco Bay Area that facilitates the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people. There will be a program with speakers followed by abundant hors d’oeuvres and drinks\, and a book signing. All are welcome! \nSpeakers to date include: \nCorrina Gould (Ohlone)— Tribal spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan and Director of Sogorea Te’ Land Trust. \nCasey Camp-Horinek (Ponca)— Environmental Ambassador for the Ponca Nation and Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) Board Member. \nLeila Salazar-Lopez —Executive Director Amazon Watch. \nOsprey Orielle Lake —Founder and Executive Director Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) and author of “The Story is in Our Bones: How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis.”. \nTo learn more about the book: https://ospreyoriellelake.earth. \nTo learn more about Sogorea Te’ Land Trust: https://sogoreate-landtrust.org/. \nTo learn more about the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network: https://www.wecaninternational.org/.

SUMMARY:The Last Fire Season by Manjula Martin
DESCRIPTION:H Is for Hawk meets Joan Didion in the Pyrocene in this arresting combination of memoir\, natural history\, and literary inquiry that chronicles one woman’s experience of life in Northern California during the worst fire season on record. \nHeld at Napa Bookmine. \nTold in luminous\, perceptive prose\, The Last Fire Season is a deeply incisive inquiry into what it really means—now—to live in relationship to the elements of the natural world. When Manjula Martin moved from the city to the woods of Northern California\, she wanted to be closer to the wilderness that she had loved as a child. She was also seeking refuge from a health crisis that left her with chronic pain\, and found a sense of healing through tending her garden beneath the redwoods of Sonoma County. But the landscape that Martin treasured was an ecosystem already in crisis. Wildfires fueled by climate change were growing bigger and more frequent: each autumn\, her garden filled with smoke and ash\, and the local firehouse siren wailed deep into the night. \nIn 2020\, when a dry lightning storm ignited hundreds of simultaneous wildfires across the West and kicked off the worst fire season on record\, Martin\, along with thousands of other Californians\, evacuated her home in the midst of a pandemic. Both a love letter to the forests of the West and an interrogation of the colonialist practices that led to their current dilemma\, The Last Fire Season\, follows her from the oaky hills of Sonoma County to the redwood forests of coastal Santa Cruz\, to the pines and peaks of the Sierra Nevada\, as she seeks shelter\, bears witness to the devastation\, and tries to better understand fire’s role in the ecology of the West. As Martin seeks a way to navigate the daily experience of living in a damaged body on a damaged planet\, she comes to question her own assumptions about nature and the complicated connections between people and the land on which we live. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nManjula Martin is coauthor\, with her father\, Orin Martin\, of Fruit Trees for Every Garden\, which won the 2020 American Horticultural Society Book Award. Her nonfiction has appeared in The New Yorker\, Virginia Quarterly Review\, The Cut\, Pacific Standard\, Modern Farmer\, and Hazlitt. She edited the anthology Scratch: Writers\, Money\, and the Art of Making a Living; was managing editor of Francis Ford Coppola’s literary magazine\, Zoetrope: All-Story; and has worked in varied editorial capacities in the nonprofit and publishing sectors. She lives in West Sonoma County\, California.

SUMMARY:What Lackluster Progress at COP28 Means for California
DESCRIPTION:January 24\, 2024 10:00 am PST – 11:30 am PST – Zoom. \nThe final agreement reached at COP28\, the annual United Nations climate conference that concluded in December\, recognized the need to transition away from fossil fuels. But it contained almost no details about how nations can wean themselves off of oil\, gas\, and coal. In this webinar\, we will hear from California legislators\, The Climate Center’s own COP28 team\, and others who attended COP28. Speakers will discuss climate policy arenas in which California leads\, including corporate accountability\, and also arenas in which we must do more\, such as phasing out oil and gas. Lawmakers will discuss what more California can do to lead the world to a climate-safe future. \nRegistration is required.
