SUMMARY:2021 Bay Area Clean Energy Access Summit: An Equitable Approach
DESCRIPTION:Acterra is a Bay Area serving nonprofit working towards local solutions to issues of climate change\, clean energy\, and environmental equity. The Clean Energy Access for All Summit is a follow-up to the Clean Energy Access for All Design Sprint\, hosted by Acterra in October 2018. The event brought together 42 participants from 33 different organizations and communities to prototype solutions to challenges outlined in The Giving Code: Silicon Valley Nonprofits and Philanthropy. The 2018 design sprint also resulted in working groups focused on policy and metrics that met monthly from January-June of 2019. \nThe 2021 rendition intends to bring about real and actionable solutions to issues of equitable access to clean energy in the Bay Area. Through providing space for participants to actively engage in conversation\, Acterra aims to provide a framework for clean energy access by connecting with local community-based organizations and Community Choice Aggregators. \nRegister and learn more here: https://hopin.com/events/2021-bay-area-clean-energy-access-summit-an-equitable-approach

SUMMARY:Society’s Global Appetite for Technology Accelerates Climate Change and E-Waste
DESCRIPTION:Technology is an essential and valued aspect of our lives\, yet it comes at a price. The carbon footprint of our devices\, the internet and the systems supporting them account for about 3.7% of global greenhouse emissions\, about as much as produced by the airline industry. Moreover\, technology products continue to consume unsustainable amounts of materials and natural resources\, be a source of hazardous substances\, add to the largest growing waste stream in the world\, e-waste\, in addition to negative climate impacts. While the technology sector is making strides to address the environmental and social impacts of their products\, there continues to be sourcing from conflict zones\, worker exposure to toxic substances during the manufacturer and assembly processes and unacceptable labor and human rights behaviors throughout the supply chain. The Global Electronics Council works towards creating a world of only sustainable technology products and services through programs and partnerships to address these negative environmental and social impacts while maximizing the many positive benefits that technology brings to our daily lives. Join GEC and SSF in a 90-minute webinar addressing how sustainable purchasing practices can accelerate the technology industry’s pathway to net zero energy and planet friendlier products and waste management practices. \n\n\n\nRegister and learn more here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/9126082165690139151

SUMMARY:Napa Climate NOW March Meeting [Virtual]: Featuring Schools 4 Climate Action Guest Speakers
DESCRIPTION:This month we’ve got guest speakers from Schools 4 Climate Action Co-Presidents Emily Bit and Alisa Karesh. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlisa Karesh\nAlisa Karesh is a Junior at Napa High School; she is also one of this year’s Napa Sierra Club interns! She was born in Moscow\, Russia\, and moved to Napa when she was ten years old. At the time\, her main interest was in art and mathematics\, but in middle school\, she began to develop an interest in environmental science. This interest amplified when she decided to take AP Environmental Science at Napa High School during my Sophomore year. \nShe then began joining various programs to explore and learn more outside of the classroom. These programs include Napa Youth Stewardship Council and EnviroLeaders Program at Sonoma Ecology Center during the Summer and Fall 2020 terms. In order to get more involved with climate activism\, she also participated in the NVUSD Climate Stabilization Committee during the early Spring of 2020\, and then joined Napa Schools for Climate Action in April and became the Co-President later in the year. \nPlease visit the Napa Schools for Climate Action website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Bit\nEmily Bit is a current junior at American Canyon High (class of 2022) and one of the Napa Sierra Club student interns for 2021! Her concern and interest in the environment first began when she was in elementary school\, learning about the air pollution caused by major gasoline companies. \nIn her freshman year of high school\, a devastating wildfire burned an entire city to the ground\, along with it\, two of her friends’ homes and all of their possessions. It was this incident that truly opened her eyes to the scary reality of climate change. \nFrom this point on\, she’s dedicated her time and efforts to climate education and activism both within Napa County and globally. In the community\, she can be found leading the Environmental and Garden club on her campus as the club President\, working with other like-minded students as the Co-President of Napa Schools for Climate Action\, on the Youth Stewardship Council with the Napa County RCD\, volunteering for the Napa County Bicycle Coalition in her free time\, and much more. Globally\, she’s a member of the Youth Climate Action Coalition and a leader of the Bay Area chapter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nJoin us to learn about what we’re working on and learn more about climate change. Meet up this Thursday\, March 18th on Zoom! \n\n\n \nFirst time using Zoom? Download these helpful Zoom instructions for participants.  \nExperiencing technical difficulties during the meeting? Troubleshoot your issues at Zoom’s support page.

SUMMARY:Solar and Energy Storage Training
DESCRIPTION:For each Napa resident\, over 90% of your greenhouse gas emissions are related to your home and your vehicles.  Oddly\, you can use those two emitters to reverse the climate change trend. We are looking for volunteers who can help us transform residential homes with the power of solar. \nIf you want to do this for your own home\, business or want to be an agent of change\, we can help educate you and enable you to educate others.  We will also provide you with hands on tools so you can help others get this done. \nTopics we will cover: \n\nWhat is solar and energy storage?\nHow important is it to climate change?\nHow does it work?\nHow working together we can make more of an impact!\nStep by Step Actions to Make Solar/Storage Happen\n  Ideal opportunities\n  Intake Sheet\n  Data from PG&E\n  Questions and Answers\n  Engaging a Contractor\n  Customer follow up\n  Tracking Success & Failure\n\nContact davekearneybrown@yahoo.com for the Zoom link. \nWe have all the technology to integrate your home with solar\, a battery system and an electric vehicle to eliminate virtually all your emissions.  This is also now cost competitive.  What we lack is the political will and the regulatory framework\, but that WILL come in time. \nAlthough you can start riding a bike\, walking\, using public transportation and obtaining an electric vehicle (we know Tesla and Nissan have the software already installed to integrate with a home energy system) to enable the transportation side of this\, this training is focused on the solar and energy storage that will help revolutionize our production and use of energy. \nSolar and energy storage for a home or a business can do the following: \n\nEliminate emissions from a building\nReduce the need for electric grid upgrades\nEliminate the need for natural gas\nCreate savings for the home or business owner\nIf purchased\, create Federal tax avoidance for the owner\nProvide power when the grid goes down\nSell clean power back to the grid\nProvide power when it is needed most by dispatching from the batteries\n\nAs stated\, this is a huge contribution to the solution\, but it is also a large step with many details.  How does one get started?

SUMMARY:Accelerating Engineered Carbon Removal in California
DESCRIPTION:California has enacted ambitious climate goals\, including a statewide carbon neutrality target by 2045. While much of the required greenhouse gas reductions will come from clean technology and emission reduction programs\, meeting these targets will necessitate new methods of actively removing carbon from the atmosphere and capturing difficult-to-mitigate emissions\, including via technologies broadly known as engineered carbon removal. \nRegister and learn more here.

SUMMARY:Cleanup in the Packaging Aisle Webinar: Why Whole Foods needs to put Planet Over Plastic
DESCRIPTION:Americans love the ocean: the sound of waves crashing and the smell of saltwater in the air — and\, sadly\, it’s also flooded with plastic. To stop plastic from entering our ocean\, we need supermarkets like Whole Foods to put ‘planet over plastic’ by eliminating all single-use plastic packaging. \nDuring our “Cleanup in the Packaging Aisle” webinar you’ll hear from Kelly McBee\, Waste Program Coordinator for As You Sow\, talk about the recent report that gave Whole Foods an F for failing to to adopt comprehensive policies to reduce its plastic footprint. \nThe Cofounder of BringIt\, Deb Singer\, will share about her experience working with Whole Foods and her role in the company’s reusable bag initiative. Finally\, Anna Farrell-Sherman\, Environment Texas Research & Policy Center Clean Water Associate will join us to talk about how plastic impacts Texas waterways–and why as a Lone Star-based brand\, Whole Foods needs to lead. \nAfter registering\, you’ll receive a link to the Zoom webinar. \nRegister and learn more about this event here.
