SUMMARY:January 6 Candlelight Vigil for Democracy
DESCRIPTION:January 6 was a violent and deadly attack against all Americans – against our country\, our democracy\, and our freedom as voters to choose the leaders that represent us so that we have a government of\, by\, and for the people. \nOne year later\, the same faction that attacked our country on January 6th is hard at work silencing our voices by restricting our freedom to vote\, attacking fair voting districts\, and quietly preparing future attempts to sabotage free and fair elections and with it our democracy. \nSo this January 6\, exactly one year later\, Americans across race\, place\, party\, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America\, the voters decide the outcome of elections! \nThe promise of democracy is not a partisan issue but a calling that unites us as Americans. To prevent this kind of attack from happening again\, our elected leaders must pass urgent legislation that will protect this country from anti-democratic forces who are continuing their efforts to destroy it. \nComing together\, we can prevent another January 6th attack and realize the promise of democracy for all of us – no matter our color\, zip code\, or income – so we all have an equal say in the decisions that shape our daily lives and futures. \n\nWhen:  January 6\, 2022\nTime:  5:00 – 6:00 p.m.\nWhere:  Veterans Park\, Downtown Napa\, 3rd and Main\nYou must RSVP at this link to attend.\nRSVP: \nWear masks\, bring tea lights or small flashlights\, and make a poster! \nAny questions\, email us here!

SUMMARY:The Next Generation of Foodware Policies: Encouraging Safer Food Packaging and Reusable Foodware
DESCRIPTION:For the last several years\, Upstream has shared single-use foodware reduction policy models that also include bans on toxic PFAS in food packaging. But\, with over 12\,000 chemicals in food packaging and other food contact materials\, PFAS bans alone won’t ensure the safety of food packaging. \nUpstream has teamed up with the Safer States network to develop more comprehensive foodware reduction policies designed to help us move towards non-toxic reusables and phase out the most problematic chemicals and materials from disposable food packaging. \nIn our next National Reuse Network meeting* on December 16\, Miriam Gordon from Upstream and Renée Sharp from Safer States will present their shared vision for the next generation of foodware policies. Based on the strategies featured in Upstream’s newly launched Reuse Policy Playbook\, we will showcase why it’s important to consider the role of toxic chemicals during the transition to reusables – including an overview of High Priority Chemicals and Materials to eliminate from food packaging and foodware – both disposable and reusable. \nDate: Thursday\, Dec 16\nTime: 11:30 AM PT / 2:30 PM ET \nJoin us to learn how you can help drive the transition to safer foodware. \nThis webinar will run for one hour. This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited\, so please register today. A recording of the event will be made available to all registrants\, regardless of if you can attend.

SUMMARY:The Climate of the Future
DESCRIPTION:Kim Stanley Robinson’s thriller The Ministry for the Future (2020) is science fiction that reads as hard-edged journalism. With short chapters and a myriad of characters\, Robinson creates a kaleidoscope of perspectives on a global climate collapse coming in 2025. Bill McKibben writes “In Kim Stanley Robinson’s anti-dystopian novel\, climate change is the crisis that finally forces mankind to deal with global inequality.” At heart an optimist\, Robinson lays out a possible path to move forward with faith in what we can create together in a post-capitalist world.\n\n\nRegister and learn more here: https://harvard.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Ki9SObPISlWvz9kaCDOTVA

SUMMARY:The Climate of Attention
DESCRIPTION:Few have covered the climate crisis as deeply and as thoughtfully as Elizabeth Kolbert. Her work includes Field Notes from a Catastrophe (2007)\,the Pulitzer-prize winning The Sixth Extinction (2016)\, and her latest Under The White Sky (2021)\, “a book about people trying to solve problems caused by people trying to solve problems.” She discusses what “a good Anthropocene” might look like\, from managing fish in the Midwest to geo-engineering the atmosphere to turn our blue sky white. \nRegister and learn more here: https://harvard.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_hNyYCudFRHeMVmtSxThn1A

SUMMARY:The Climate of Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Michael Pollan has been educating us with illuminating prose on “the botany of desire” for a very long time. He will discuss his latest book This Is Your Mind On Plants and his landmark bestseller How To Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness\, Dying\, Addiction\, Depression\, and Transcendence. Pollan’s call for change\, restoration\, and resiliency may be the very thing we need to bolster our consciousness in the midst of climate collapse. SUMMARY:The Climate of Grief
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Chang writes in her New York Times Notable Book of 2020\, Obit\, “I always knew that grief was something I could smell. But I didn’t know that it’s not actually a noun but a verb. That it moves.” After the deaths of her parents\, she refused to write elegies; instead\, Chang wrote poetic obituaries of the beautiful\, broken world that surrounds her (many see them as love letters). How does poetry illuminate this time of uncertainty? How do we embrace grief and not look away from all that is breaking our hearts? What we thought was a pause is now a place\, and grief is part of this place.\nRespondent: Jorie Graham\, Poet\, Harvard English Department \nRegister and learn more here: https://harvard.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_BdGi-JXVSDe8RpzNonMLqQ

SUMMARY:The Climate of Compassion for all Beings
DESCRIPTION:We are not the only species that lives and loves and grieves on this planet. Janet Gyatso will focus on the phenomenology of being not just among humans but with all other sentient beings. How we can cultivate the capacity to have such experiences\, in ways that might reform our ethical and spiritual practices? How might compassion and an understanding toward animals heighten and mirror reciprocal relationships toward each other. What does it mean not only to be human\, but one species among many?\nRespondent: Stephanie Paulsell\, Susan Shallcross Swartz Professor of the Practice of Christian Studies and Faculty Dean\, Eliot House\, Harvard College \nLearn more and register for this event here: https://harvard.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_-VVFRx0QTSuynnOnK3Cuyw

SUMMARY:The Climate of Relationships and Intersectionality
DESCRIPTION:Morgan Curtis and brontë velez will discuss the intersectionality of race\, class\, gender\, and climate collapse\, and how seeing the world whole through the lens of relationships creates communities of care rather than conflict. They will consider what reparations might look like on behalf of racial justice and justice for the Earth\, and why it is critical to find a radical\, intergenerational\, diverse and dynamic dialogue that calls for a global paradigm shift.\nRespondent: Melissa Wood Bartholomew\, Associate Dean of Diversity & Inclusion\, Harvard Divinity School \nLearn more and register for this event here: https://harvard.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3PxblQHoTau6lThkdayoHA

SUMMARY:Katharine Hayhoe on Hope and Healing
DESCRIPTION:Despite her identity as an evangelical\, climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe doesn’t accept global warming on faith; she crunches the data\, analyzes the models\, and helps engineers\, city managers and ecologists quantify the impacts. \nIn her new book\, Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World\, Hayhoe argues that when it comes to changing hearts and minds\, facts are only one part of the equation; we need to find shared values in order to connect our unique identities to collective action. Yet in light of the latest\, bleakest UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report—which has been called a “code red for humanity”—where does Hayhoe still manage to find hope? \nJoin us for a conversation with this United Nations Champion of the Earth and one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People. \nLearn more and register for this event here: https://www.commonwealthclub.org/events/2021-09-23/katharine-hayhoe-hope-and-healing

SUMMARY:2021 Bay Area Clean Energy Access Summit: An Equitable Approach
DESCRIPTION:Acterra is a Bay Area serving nonprofit working towards local solutions to issues of climate change\, clean energy\, and environmental equity. The Clean Energy Access for All Summit is a follow-up to the Clean Energy Access for All Design Sprint\, hosted by Acterra in October 2018. The event brought together 42 participants from 33 different organizations and communities to prototype solutions to challenges outlined in The Giving Code: Silicon Valley Nonprofits and Philanthropy. The 2018 design sprint also resulted in working groups focused on policy and metrics that met monthly from January-June of 2019. \nThe 2021 rendition intends to bring about real and actionable solutions to issues of equitable access to clean energy in the Bay Area. Through providing space for participants to actively engage in conversation\, Acterra aims to provide a framework for clean energy access by connecting with local community-based organizations and Community Choice Aggregators. \nRegister and learn more here: https://hopin.com/events/2021-bay-area-clean-energy-access-summit-an-equitable-approach

SUMMARY:Society’s Global Appetite for Technology Accelerates Climate Change and E-Waste
DESCRIPTION:Technology is an essential and valued aspect of our lives\, yet it comes at a price. The carbon footprint of our devices\, the internet and the systems supporting them account for about 3.7% of global greenhouse emissions\, about as much as produced by the airline industry. Moreover\, technology products continue to consume unsustainable amounts of materials and natural resources\, be a source of hazardous substances\, add to the largest growing waste stream in the world\, e-waste\, in addition to negative climate impacts. While the technology sector is making strides to address the environmental and social impacts of their products\, there continues to be sourcing from conflict zones\, worker exposure to toxic substances during the manufacturer and assembly processes and unacceptable labor and human rights behaviors throughout the supply chain. The Global Electronics Council works towards creating a world of only sustainable technology products and services through programs and partnerships to address these negative environmental and social impacts while maximizing the many positive benefits that technology brings to our daily lives. Join GEC and SSF in a 90-minute webinar addressing how sustainable purchasing practices can accelerate the technology industry’s pathway to net zero energy and planet friendlier products and waste management practices. \n\n\n\nRegister and learn more here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/9126082165690139151
