A plane fueled by fat and sugar has crossed the Atlantic Ocean

For the first time, a commercial plane flew across the Atlantic Ocean yesterday without burning fossil fuels, The Washington Post’s Nicolás Rivero reports.

Virgin Atlantic said the test flight from London to New York was powered by 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, a broad category of jet fuel that generates fewer carbon emissions than standard kerosene blends.

This flight’s fuel was made from waste fats and plant sugars and emits about 70 percent less carbon than petroleum-based jet fuel, according to a news release.

Look at what they are doing in Marin! On May 10, 2022, the Marin County Board of Supervisors adopted a Reusable Foodware Ordinance.

The Ordinance uses the hierarchy of: reusables are best, compostable fiber foodware is compliant, and single-use plastics are prohibited. Reducing the amount of disposable items we consume not only is better for the environment, it reduces the amount of litter in the community and lowers the amount of greenhouse gas inputs used to produce the disposable product in the first place. Let’s go, Napa!
